Flat White Holiday Spice: Post-Holidays Deliciousness

By Ellie Drabnis on January 5, 2017

Even though Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa and even New Years have passed, seasonal coffees are still very much with us, especially at Starbucks. These flavors such as gingerbread, chestnut praline, caramel brulée and peppermint mocha to name a few, are limited but worth trying.

While I enjoy all of those flavors, I am constantly ordering them. I wanted to order something different for once.

I thought to order The Flat White, which is a drink made up of “bold ristretto shots of espresso [to]get the perfect amount of steamed whole milk to create a not too strong, not too creamy, just right flavor.”  I tried this drink at a friend’s suggestion and I liked the overall flavor and consistency. Which, my friend attributed to how I choose to order my coffee.

I often get teased that I order coffee with my milk be it hot or cold but that’s just the way I was raised to make it. In most Latino households it is customary to have cafe con leche (coffee with milk), after all.

But, then I saw that the ‘Flat White Holiday Spice’ was on Starbuck’s menu. I had not seen that before and the name alone piqued my curiosity.

I figured well, I like the regular Flat White, this holiday spice version ought to be pretty good. Now, I am not the biggest fan of cinnamon and could only hope that other spices would come into play.

When ordering, I found out that the Flat White Holiday Spice mixture or not, can be ordered with milk other than whole milk. I can’t say I like milk in general so, this made me even more excited to try the beverage. I decided to go with the Flat White Holiday Spice version using nonfat (skim) milk.

Now, being a klutz, I did knock my cup around in the car a bit and spilled some of my drink but, not too much. Once I was no longer in a moving car, I was able to give the holiday-fied version of one of my favorite Starbucks drinks a try.

Before the taste, the consistency won me over. While very rich, it was not too rich. At risk of sounding cliche, the consistency was just right. Even with my home coffeemaker, sometimes my coffee is too watery or too thick.

Then came the taste of the drink. That spice mixture is nice. While there are definite hints of cinnamon, nutmeg and other spices I couldn’t decipher, none of them are overwhelming. They all come together to create a sort of ‘perfect blend’ of spices. I saw no need to add sugar. From the first sip, the Flat White Holiday Spice was absolutely delicious.

I finished my Flat White Holiday Spice completely and I was left wishing there were more of it. I need to order a Venti next time!
